Pittsburgh Black Media Federation Donates Books to Two Schools
The
Pittsburgh Black Media Federation’s book drive, PBMF Reads: Project Book
Bridge, collected 972 new and gently used children’s books, exceeding
its 5goal to collect 500 books. Rougly 500 of the donated book were given to two Pittsburgh Public Schools — Pittsburgh Faison K-5 in Homewood and Pittsburgh
Manchester PreK-8 on the North Side.
“As communications professionals, we value literacy and the written word,” said PBMF’s Community Service Subcommittee co-chair, Clarece Polke. “I just hope the kids enjoy the books and find pieces of themselves, along with thoughts and ideas they never knew existed, between the pages.”

PBMF
sponsored the book drive, its first, to serve communities where children
may not have sufficient access to books. Project Book Bridge’s purpose is to promote
active reading by children to help them develop the critical thinking and
literacy skills necessary to be academically competitive and culturally
competent.
On Friday, September 19th, the Pittsburgh Black Media Federation (PBMF) presented more than 300 of those books to Dr. Russell Patterson, Pittsburgh Faison's principal. The non-profit media organization also read books to all five 1st grade classrooms at Pittsburgh Faison. The guest readers included President Tory Parrish, Vice President Brian Cook, Book Drive Coordinator Clarece Polke, Tiasha Stevenson, and Shaunda Miles.
