Balance Propels Obama Academy Girls to City League Crown
Step one in Obama Academy’s pursuit for excellence was achieved when it won the City League regular-season title with a 10-0 record. Step two was accomplished Saturday when the Eagles rode a balanced attack and a withering defense that forced 30 turnovers in a 66-38 victory against Allderdice in the City League championship at Petersen Events Center.
Eagles coach Monique McCoy praised both aspects of her team’s play, particularly the effort displayed by 6-foot sophomore center Michaela Porter, who led four Obama players in double figures with 18 points.
Step three in Obama’s equation is on hold as the Eagles (16-8) are scheduled to meet DuBois, a representative from District 9, in a PIAA Class AAAA play-in game. The time and date is yet to be determined. The Eagles were dismissed by WPIAL runner-up Hempfield in a PIAA first-round game last year.
“Michaela Porter played hard,” McCoy said. “She got some big rebounds and put the ball in [the basket]. Our 2-2-1 defense was awesome.”
“All of us contribute in each game,” said Porter, who had three teammates — Dalaysia Askew, Samone Rainey and Taylin Tyler — score 10 points apiece. “It’s a usual thing for three or four of us to be in double figures.”
